Gresford Athletic 0-3 Holywell Town
The Wellmen move back up to second after a dominant display against Gresford Athletic.
Holywell arrived at Clappers Lane boosted with the return of Steve Lewis and Phil Lloyd to the squad which was at full strength and given the teams recent history at Gresford they would need to perform well to beat an inform home side, and the Wellmen didn't disappoint their large travelling support with a resounding victory in a game that the visitors dominated from the first whistle.
The Wellmen started well and after some early exchanges took the lead in the 7th minute when captain Steve Thomas sprung the home sides off side trap to find himself one on one with the home keeper and Thomas made no mistake with a cool finish. Things got even better for the visitors in the 11th minute when the dangerous Steve Thomas was felled inside the box giving referee Dan Fogerty little choice but to point to the penalty spot and the in form Sam Jones made no mistake from the resultant penalty to make it 2-0.
Holywell were now totally dominant and creating chance after chance with the home keeper forced into action to make several great saves, a particularly good one being his tip over from a rasping Mark Winslade long range shot in the 20th minute. Further chances fell to Steve Lewis, Paul Williams and Phil Lloyd who hit the crossbar with a cross come shot and as the referee blew for half time, Gresford would no doubt be relieved to be going in only 2 goals down at the break.
The second half started with the wind picking up which was not in the favour of the Wellmen and with the pitch starting to cut up they knew that things ought to be a lot more difficult in this half. However the Wellmen were straight out of the blocks and dominated again. The hard working forward pair of Mark Winslade and Steve Lewis started to carve out chance after chance for themselves and their colleagues and the like up play through the side was impressive. Good chances fell to Lewis, Sam Jones, Winslade and Steve Thomas who hit the cross bar. Of note the home side created their first meaningful chance of the game in the 80th minute when Holywell keeper Shaun Pearson dealt well with a rare shot form the home side attackers and as throughout the game the visiting rear guard stood firm.
Wellmen substitute Graham Williams went close after good work by Winsalde again and in the 88th minute Steve Lewis got the goal he deserved after calming rounding the keeper and slotting home from the edge of the area after beating the offside trap again. The goal was no more than the visitors deserved and substitute Marc Gunther almost added a 4th with a fierce shot from a tight angle that forced the home keeper to make a great save to keep it out.
