Holyhead Hotspur 0-1 Holywell Town
The Wellmen return home from Holyhead Hotspur with all 3 points after a great 1-0 win courtesy of Steve Thomas' 55th minute goal.
The Wellmen travelled to Holyhead looking to get back to winning ways following last weeks defeat at Rhyl, and over the years, The New Oval hasn't been a really good hunting ground for the Wellmen so we knew today's game would be a lot tougher than the last time we played Hotspur a couple of months ago, when we ran out 4-0 winners at Halkyn Road.
With the strong wind and a heavy pitch making it difficult for both teams, the Wellmen should have taken an early lead when Danny Desormeaux, who returned to the side today, intercepted a pass by the Holyhead midfielder and fed the ball through to Steve Lewis to chase, he burst through on goal and with the keeper Paul Pritchard coming out to narrow the angle, he saw his shot go over the bar.
The next chance fell to Holyhead, as Kenleigh Owen found himself in space on the right, and his shot saw Shaun Pearson produce a great save, diving to his right to parry the ball out for a corner. Jonathon Jones then conceded a corner in a dangerous position, and Dean Garmey's kick saw Pearson save the ball again to deny the home side the lead.
Holyhead Hotspur should have broken the deadlock midway through the first half when Matty Harvey was adjudged to have fouled Kenleigh Owen and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Owen got up to take the spot kick but Wellmen keeper Shaun Pearson dived to his right and pulled off a great save to deny Owen giving the home side the lead, a great save cheered on by the good contingent of Wellmen supporters in the main stand. Pearson was on fine form and saved the Wellmen again with a few minutes of the half remaining to see the scores level at the break.
The second half saw Pearson save well at the feet of Owen and the deadlock was broken on 55 minutes and the Wellmen took the lead through Club Captain Steve Thomas . The ball was played into the box from the left, and Thomas controlled the ball before lifting the ball over the oncoming Paul Pritchard and the ball settled into the bottom corner of the net.
Pearson then denied Owen again from equalising and Mel McGuiness saw a couple of shots blocked as the home side looked for the equaliser. The Wellmen's defence held firm and Town were unlucky not to increase their lead on 62 minutes through Steve Lewis, after a great ball from Desormeaux saw Lewis control the ball brilliantly, and his chip fell inches over the upright with Pritchard beaten. Owen then turned on the edge of the box and saw his shot go wide, then goalscorer Thomas intercepted a stray pass from Alex Jones, and ran goalwards and his low cross into the box towards Lewis was cleared to safety by Corey Jones. A good ball over the top by Phil Lloyd saw Sub Graeme Williams pick it up and ran goalwards, and his lay off to Lewis was good and as Lewis went to pull the trigger, the Holyhead centre back seemed to clip Lewis and he fell to the floor, but referee deemed the defender had got the ball and the home side cleared the ball upfield.
The home side piled on the pressure looking for the equaliser and the Wellmen responded brilliantly, thwarting anything that Holyhead Hotspur put at them, and with the home side pressing, Town broke upfield and Mark Winslade fired the ball over from a tight angle. Even more pressure by the home side could not see them equalise and the Welllen held on to take all three points. With other results going the Wellmen's way, the victory see's the Wellmen climb to 2nd place in the Huws Gray Alliance League.
