Holywell Town 3-1 Caersws
Wellmen return to winning ways with convincing 3-1 win at home to Caersws.
The Wellmen welcomed mid Wales outfit Caersws to Halkyn Road as we aimed to get back to winning ways in the league.
The game started and a couple of minutes in, Town won a free kick close to the halfway line after Steve Lewis was fouled. The kick was lofted into the penalty area and Matty Harvey rose to head the ball and his header saw the ball fall into the back of the net via the post to give Town a great start.
The next attack came from the visitors with Tom Bethell going close but goalkeeper Andy Hughes, making his first appearance of the season was down well to easily gather the ball. Town shortly afterwards won a corner, and a great ball in saw the ball get a flick on from a Caersws defender and the ball narrowly flew past the rising Gareth Sudlow who was up ready to head the ball goalwards. Steve Blenkinsop then at the other end of the pitch had a shot go wide before Town's Steve Lewis had a shot blocked for a corner.
The visitors were growing more and more in the game as the half progressed, and the dangerous Bethell then found himself through on goal after wrong footing Town's Phil Lloyd but his shot was blocked well by Matty Kendrick. A few minutes later Bethel found himself through on goal once again but Andy Hughes saved well.
As the game entered the final 5 minutes of the half, Town won a free kick in a dangerous position after Graeme Williams was fouled. Steve Lewis stood over the ball and his free kick clipped the wall and went narrowly wide of the post. From the resulting corner, Sudlow got up well to head goalwards but his effort was blocked and went out for another corner. The second corner in quick succession saw the ball fall to Lewis on the edge of the box and his shot was just a couple of inches wide. IN the final minute of the half, McGilloway had an effort blocked on the line by the Caersws defender, and the ball came back out to McGilloway who's shot flew over the bar.
The second half got underway with Darren Gowans replacing Brady McGilloway who had picked up a knock, and first into action was Andyughes who saved well from Rhydian Davies. Town's first real chance of the half fell to |Town's goalscorer Harvey, but his shot was blocked. Shortly afterwards, Town doubled their lead. A good ball over the top saw Steve Lewis chase the ball and Caersws keeper Luke Evans ran out of his box in an attempt to clear the ball, but Lewis soon went round him with the ball at his feet, and was left with an open goal and his effort rolled along the floor and nestled into the corner of the net to double Town's lead.
A few minutes later, the visitors won a free kick in a dangerous position, and Elliot Jones' dead ball forced a good save out of Andrew Hughes, seeing him dive well to the right to save the ball. Just after the hour mark, Lewis done a great bit of skill, to lift the ball over the visitors Tom Bethell, and he lay the ball off to Graeme Williams on the edge of the box, but his shot was blocked to keep the score at 2-0 to Town. A few minutes later Town increased their lead and put the game to bed by adding another goal. Sub Darren Gowans picked up the ball on the right, and ran forward before his shot from the edge of the area saw the ball fly into the top corner to give Evans no chance in the Caersws Goal. The goal was no more than Town deserved, and the goal lifted the Wellmen with Lewis going close to increasing Towns lead on a couple of occasions, one being a free kick which hit the wall and went out for a corner, and his second effort saw him turn and volley the ball goal wards but for the goalkeeper to tip the ball out for a corner.
With the game in the final 10 minutes, Caersws' Rhydian Davies had a shot saved by Hughes, before a great Holywell Town move saw Darren Gowans feed the ball out to Paul D Williams, and his pass to Jamie McDaid saw the Wellmen sticker watch as his shot blocked by the keepers legs.
As the game entered the final few minutes of the half, Caersws won a corner after Gowans was adjudged to have fouled a player in the penalty area, and referee Mark Petch pointed to the spot. Caersws' Rhydian Davies stepped up to take it and fired past Hughes to pull a goal back for the visitors. In the final couple of chances of the game, Town's Steve Lewis saw a shot go wide, before he was again put through on goal, and his deft chip beat the advancing keeper, but fell over the bar.
The Referee blew for full time and the Wellmen walked off the pitch to a round of applause by the supporters who were supportive of the Wellmen's 3-1 victory, seeing the lads get back to winning ways ahead of Wednesday night's home game against Gresford Athletic.
