The Wellmen welcome our closest rivals to Halkyn Road on Wednesday night, as we entertain Flint Town United in a mouth-watering derby!
This is one of the fixtures everyone looks out for when the fixtures are released, and The Wellmen will be looking to carry on their unbeaten start to the season after picking up 4 points from a possible 6. The way the Wellmen came back into the game on Saturday against Rhyl shows great character amongst the squad, and many would say that we were unlucky not to come away from that game with all 3 points, especially after having a penalty saved well by the Rhyl keeper.
So the lads will be full of confidence going into the game and will be looking to build on the previous couple of matches to get more points on the board. Town will be without Matty Harvey, who picked up 2 yellow cards on Saturday against Rhyl, and also missing is Danny Desormeaux (work) and Jack Pennington (holiday). Steve Lewis will once again be looking to get on the scoresheet, looking to continue his goalscoring form which has seen him score 3 in 2 games for the Wellmen.
Manager John Haseldin added, “ I’m looking forward to another big test on Wednesday night, like always we start this derby game second favourites and look to cause an upset against a team which with the backing and full time manager you'd expect them to be favourites to win the league.
I think we certainly need to start better than we did against Rhyl and play with the confidence ,freedom and determination we shown second half to get anything out of the game. Hopefully they'll be a good crowd behind us and we feel we owe them a performance from last year’s fixture at Halkyn Road. There's been some great games between the two sides especially over the last couple of seasons since we have come back into the HGA and I'm sure this one will be no different!."
Flint Town United picked up 3 points on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Ruthin Town, but they will be without Jack Pickering, who damaged his knee ligaments on Saturday, and the club will look at Ieuan Hewitts injury to see if he is fit to play after he was taken to hospital on Saturday after a heavy fall.
The game has always drawn a good crowd, and hopefully tomorrow will be no different so please make every effort to support the lads in what will surely be a great game as both sides will want to win to claim bragging rights. The match kicks off at 7.30pm so hopefully see you there…..
