Holywell Town 2-0 Tranmere Rovers
The Wellmen's excellent preseason form continues with a victory over Tranmere Rovers' Academy side.
The Wellmen welcomed Tranmere Rovers Academy side to Halkyn Road for our latest pre-season friendly, and buoyed by Saturday’s victory over Winsford United, the lads were confident of getting a result against the side from the Wirral.
The game started with a quick tempo, with both teams hoping for the early goal to take control of the game. Steve Lewis and Shaun Tuck both getting half chances but their efforts were thwarted by the Tranmere rear guard, and the visitors weren’t too far away from opening the scoring but for a good save from keeper Joe Griffiths.
The breakthrough goal came on 28 minutes. A good move saw Town win a corner, and from the resulting cross, Matty Harvey was there to power a header home to give Town the lead. The goal gave Town the impetus, and another good move saw Steve Lewis burst through into the box and his cross from the byline was caught in the air by the keeper with Shaun Tuck waiting to pounce at the far post.
Tranmere looked for an equaliser before the break, and with a few minutes of the half remaining, a shot by their no.11 was saved well by Griffiths, who was down quick to gather the low shot, to keep the score 1-0 at the half time interval.
The second half began with Tranmere putting a lot of pressure on the Wellmen’s goal. The visitors had a shot blocked then in the next move, a ball into the box saw the attacker get a touch to the ball, buit could only drive the ball towards the cross bar and fortunately for Town, the ball fell to Matty Harvey who was able to clear the ball to safety. Tranmere were soon back on the attack, and again pressed forward, and the Tranmere striker brought out a great save by Griffiths, who managed to tip the ball over the bar with his fingertips with the ball destined to find the roof of the net.
With Town having absorbed the pressure, the next couple of chances fell to Steve Lewis who had a shot saved by the keeper, and also headed wide from a Phil Lloyd cross. Midway through the half, Town were thankful for Griffiths for keeping them in the lead, a good move on the edge of the box found the ball find the feet of the Tranmere attacker, and his shot aimed at the bottom corner forced Griffiths stretching to save with his feet and able to gather before the onrushing Tranmere player.
Sub Darren Gowans was soon amongst the action, and his pass to Steve Thomas on the left saw Thomas’ cross blocked before the feet of Lewis, then Lewis was in the thick of the action again, as he ran into the box and was fouled by the defender and the referee had no hesitation but to point to the spot. Up stepped Lewis to take the spot kick, but the keeper pulled off a great save, diving to his right to block the kick with his hands and the score remained 1-0 to the Wellmen.
However, Town didn’t have to wait long to increase their lead. With 76 minutes played, a piece of brilliance by Shaun Tuck saw him curl a great shot from fully 30 yards into the top corner with the keeper well beaten. It was a great goal and was Tuck’s 8th goal in 6 pre-season matches.
With the game won, Town had further chances to increase their lead but both Brady McGilloway and Steve Lewis’ effort both fell inches wide of the post, and as the referee blew for full time, the Wellmen walked off the pitch to great applause by the Halkyn Road faithful, and Town’s impressive pre-season results continued.
