Holywell Town 3-0 Llanfairpwll
Welsh Cup 2nd Qualifying Round
Holywell Town welcomed unbeaten Welsh Alliance Division 2 leaders Llanfairpwll to Halkyn Road in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the Welsh Cup.
The game opened brightly with both sides having a couple of chances which wern’t taken and the match came to life in the 15th minute. Llanfair had chance after chance in a goalmouth scramble which goal keeper Danny Stanton and Brett Jones managed to save or block the ball and Ashley Durham jumped and seemed to use his hand to prevent the ball crossing the line and the referee had no alternative but to send Durham off and gave Llanfair a penalty.
Kelvin Frazer took the penalty and Danny Stanton produced a great save to knock the ball back out and Holywell were let off the hook. A few monutes later, Holywell thought they had taken the lead when Graeme Williams fired the ball home after a good move involving Tom Carney and Tony Roebuck, but the referee blew his whistle as he thought Williams was in an off side position.
Further chances fell to Roebuck and Ian Griffiths but we couldn’t find the back of the net and Tom Carney watched as his shot it the side netting. Griffiths again had a chance after a great move involving Roebuck and Paul Williams but his shot went past the post and out for a goal kick which meant that the teams went in at the break all square at nil nil.
The second half started with Llanfairpwll putting a bit of pressure on and Brett Jones had to be alert to clear a ball from the onrushing Llanfairpwll’s Iwan Williams but it wasn’t long before Town took the lead through Paul Williams. Ian Griffiths released a great ball through the defence and Williams broke clear and calmly slotted the ball past the oncoming Stephen Smith in the Llanfairpwll goal.
Llanfairpwll then put Holywell under pressure by playing good football but whenever they got the ball to the forwards, Town’s rear guard of John Shepherd, Brett Jones and Matty Roberts dealt with all the pressure to prevent Llanfair getting the chance to equalise. On 75 minutes, Williams again chased a great through ball but the Smith cleared.
We then had a delay of 5-10 minutes after Llanfairpwll’s Aron Owen suffered a bad injury as he came off worse from a challenge with Tony Roebuck for a ball that both went in hard for. Aron was stretchered off and received a warm applause from the supporters.
Matty Roberts then made a great run down the left and reacing the byline, pulled the ball back but Johnny Roberts cleared before Ian Griffiths could get to it. A couple of minutes later, Town increased their lead after Marc Gunther broke clear and his shot was only parried away into the path of Steve Thomas, and all he had to do was tap it into an empty goal. The game was now safe and as the match went into injury time, Town rounded off the scoring through Paul Williams who got his second of the match. Leon Hughes rode a few challenges and ran down the left before passing the ball through to Willow, and he fired the ball past the advancing Smith to score his second and Towns third goal of the afternoon.
Paul Williams deservedly won the man of the match award and his two goals helped put Holywell Town’s name in the hat for the next round.
