Mawddach Cup Round 2

Holywell Town v Gwalchmai

In a score more suited to a tennis match, Holywell Town progress into the next round of the Mawddach Cup after beating Gwalchmai 7-5 at Halkyn Road.

Town had a dream start when Steve Thomas scored as early as the 8th minute when his volley from a great Sam Jones ball flew into the net which gave the keeper no chance. A few minutes later, Sam Jones hit the woodwork with his shot and Graham Boylan saw his effort go wide of the post. Luke Tyson then had an effort go over after a great run which saw him beat 3 defenders before shooting from a tight angle. Town were well on top and Sam Jones delivered another great ball into the box and Boylan lay the ball off the Sion McHugh but his shot went wide of the post. Sam Jones then had a shot punched clear by Ryan McKean in the Gwalchmai goal then a few minutes later, Town got what they deserved as Matty Harvey rose to head home a Steve Thomas corner.

Gwalchmai’s Corey Sinnott had an effort saved by Stanton and the Town keeper had to be alert to clear the ball after a good ball was put through for the Gwalchmai striker to attack. Town fully deserved their two goal lead at the break but knew it could have been a lot more.

The second half got underway and Sam Jones went on a run and beat the challenge of two defenders but was brought down on the edge of the box and Town were awarded a free kick. Sam stood up to take it and his effort flew into the back of the net with the keeper well beaten. Gwalchmai clawed one back from the penalty spot after Danny Stanton had brought down Mark Griffiths and up stepped Corey Sinnott and made no mistake from the spot.

A few minutes later, Gwalchmai had got another through Mark Griffiths. Stanton done well to save an effort by John Earnshaw but the ball only fell to the feet of Griffiths who fired home. Gwalchmai were then reduced to 10 men as Sam Carter was sent off for a 2nd yellow card, much to the disgust of the Gwlachmai bench who then had coach Kenny Jones sent to the stands for something he said to the referee. Once the match restarted, Ryan Mckean done well to save the ball at the feet of Sam Jones who was angry with himself as he knew he should have scored.

Gwalchmai then equalised through Gary Jones then disaster struck for Town as Gerallt Jones scored to give the visitors the advantage. The lead however only lasted a couple of minutes as Paul Williams scored a great solo goal to level the scores once more. Steve Thomas scored his second of the afternoon to give the Wellmen the lead again before Gwalchmai’s Mark Griffiths once again scored to level the scores.

As the game entered the 80th minute, a great ball by John Leonard got Sam Jones through on goal and he rounded the keeper and tapped the ball in to give Town the lead yet again. Matt y Roberts then had an effort go slightly over before Phil Lloyd rounded off the scoring for the game after he was put through on goal and slotted the ball past the advancing McKean in Gwlachmai’s goal.

It was a hard fought win and credit should go to Gwalchmai for fighting back and not folding being 3-0 down, especially as they were down to 10 men for half hour or so in the second half, but Town will be happy to progress into the next round where Denbigh Town await us, and that match will be played on Tuesday 8th April with a 7.30pm kick off.
