Last Saturday’s trip to Penrhyncoch saw current Holywell Town captain Steve Thomas return to the ground where he made his debut for the Wellmen!

Congratulations mate, you've played a huge part in helping turn the club around! Here's to another 10 years!!
- John Haseldin - Manager

Back then, as a buzzing 16 year old, Steve signed for the Wellmen from Caerwys FC, and was thrown into the squad by Manager Simon Sedgewick and found himself in the starting 11 for the long trip away to Penrhyncoch as the Wellmen battled to stay in the then called Cymru Alliance League. Steve didn’t seem out of place with the experienced and more matured players on the pitch that day, and from that display, all those watching that afternoon at Cae Baker knew that the name Steve Thomas would be synonymous with North Wales football for years to come.

Steve became a regular from that season on, and despite a short time away in Flint Town United, Steve returned and became a firm favourite amongst the Wellmen supporters. Steve played in the same side as elder brother Gareth, and also keeping it in the family, Mike Thomas, Steve’s Dad was also the manager.

Steve regularly picked up Man of the Matches awards, and scored many an important goals for the Club. He was also crowned Welsh Alliance Player of the Year during the 2009/10 season, when more than 80% of the opposition chose him as the man of the match during the season’s fixtures, and I’m sure is still a record to this day, and was runners up the following season, missing out on doing the double by one vote.

No doubt the two goals which supporters will remember that Steve scored came in the FAW Trophy against Conwy United back in 2010/11 Season, when the Wellmen were two goals behind with a couple of minutes left on the clock. Town were awarded a penalty which Steve converted, then were given another penalty shortly into injury time. Steve, yet again coolly blasted the ball into the net to make it 2-2 before Tony Hogan scored a last minute winner to claim a very very late victory for the Wellmen! Steve’s goals will go down in history, and Steve showed nerves of steel to score both penalties.

That victory was the turning point in the clubs fortunes, and Steve was instrumental in reviving the fortunes of the club as we challenged to gain promotion out of the Welsh Alliance. After a couple of seasons of coming close, we finally gained the promotion we deserved and rightly find ourselves in the Huws Gray Alliance.

Despite other clubs showing an interest in him, Thomas has stayed loyal to Holywell Town Football Club, and during his career with the Wellmen, he has made over 300 appearances for the Club, and hopefully will add to that tally in years to come. One of Steve’s best season’s for the club was in 2012/13, where he scored 27 goals in just 39 appearances. He still finds himself on the scoresheet on a regular basis, and scored a brace of goals in the recent 8-0 win over Coedpoeth in the 1st Round of the Welsh Cup.

From everyone at the club, we would like to thank Steve for his unbelievable commitment and loyalty over the years, and hopefully we have quite a few season’s to come as he goes down in Holywell Town folklore history!

Cheers Stevie!
