On the eve of the new Welsh Alliance season, here is a review of the 2011/12 season in the words of Steve Roberts, Secretary

HOLYWELL TOWN FIRST TEAM
SEASON REVIEW 2011/12

The eagerly awaited new season kicked off mid August and first up for the Wellmen was a Welsh Cup tie at home against Llandyrnog United. The match did not go according to plan and Town were beaten 1-0 and it was Llandyrnog’s name which went into the hat for the next round. Town’s first league match came a few days later and the usual early season midweek trip to Llandudno Junction. Town made up for the previous Saturday’s defeat, beating the Railwaymen 2-0 with Paul Williams and Wayne Edwards on the scoresheet. Town then made the long trip to Nefyn and came home with all 3 points after a 3-1 victory, Wayne Edwards again amongst the scorers with a brace of goals. Town’s first home match in the league saw Llanrwst travel to Halkyn Road. Town won by 2 goals to 1, with Simon Holloway opening the scoring and Wayne Edwards added a second. After 3 matches, Town were unbeaten and faced the difficult trip to Pwllheli in confident mood, unfortunately, missing a few regulars, Town lost 3-0 and a trip to Bethesda 2 days later erased all memories of that performance as Town won 3-1. Town’s goal scorers were Sam Jones, with a brace of goals, and a single goal by Wayne Edwards, adding to his impressive early season tally.

September started with a brilliant 2-0 victory at Llanrug with Wayne Edwards and Sam Jones amongst the goals before Town done the double over Bethesda Athletic, beating them 3-0 with another Wayne Edwards double and Sam Jones getting the third. Town then had an edgy 4-3 win over Llandudno Junction, Edwards scoring his first hat trick of the season before we were cruelly knocked out of the Cookson Cup with a defeat on penalties away to Glan Conwy.

October began with a convincing 4-0 victory over Caernarfon Wanderers at Halkyn Road, Wayne Edwards with another hat trick with Sam Jones also on the scoresheet. Town then beat Kinmel Bay Sports in the FAW Trophy with another Wayne Edwards hat trick. A week later, The Wellmen suffered their first league defeat as Caernarfon Town went away from Halkyn Road with the 3 points after a 2-1 victory, Steve Thomas getting Town’s consolation goal. Town then made the trip to Gwlachmai and in atrocious weather, came home with a deserved point after a 2-2 draw, Sam Jones getting both of Town’s goals.

November saw the Wellmen go unbeaten and the first victory came over Glan Conwy at Halkyn Road, Town victorious by 3 goals to 1 with Sam Jones getting a hat trick before Town progressed into Round 2 of the Barritt Cup after beating Bodedern Atheltic by 3 goals to 0 at Halkyn Road. Next up was a trip to Caernarfon Wanderers, and they were easily beaten 5-1 with Sam Jones and Wayne Edwards both getting 2 goals, with Leon Hughes getting the other. Treaddur Bay were then beaten in the FAW Trophy before a convincing 4-0 victory over Nefyn United in the league at Halkyn Road, Tony Hogan, Kallum Pierce, Gareth Thomas and Sam Jones getting the goals for the Wellmen.

December saw league challengers Holyhead Hotspur come to Halkyn Road, and Town played them off the park and beat them by 2 goals to 0, Steve Thomas and Sam Jones getting the goals to give Town a deserved victory.
With matches called off due to the weather, Town’s next match was the Christmas clash at Denbigh, and a Tony Roebuck goal midway through the second half gave Town the points.

Town were top of the league at the beginning of the New Year and the first match of 2012 saw us travel to Llanfair PG and we begun 2012 where we left off with a 3-1 victory - Sam Jones, Wayne Edwards and Gareth Thomas on the scoresheet for the Wellmen. We then faced Denbigh Town in the FAW Trophy and were knocked out after our worse performance of the season saw them beat us by 4 goals to nil, and the Cup Holders were out! We put the disappointment of that defeat with a 3-0 victory over Blaenau Ffestiniog in the Barritt Cup, a Chris Boulton Hat Trick seeing us through to the next round. Town returned to League action to round off Januray and came home from Bodedern with a 3-0 victory with goals from Steve Thomas, Sam Jones and Tony Roebuck.

Due to matches being called off, February saw two matches get the go ahead and Town won both. 1st match was against Llanrug then Llanfairpwll left Halkyn Road empty handed as the Wellmen won 3-0 and 2-0 respectively. On the scoresheet for Holywell were John Haseldin and Steve Thomas against Llanrug and Paul Williams and Sam Jones doing the damage against Llanfairpwll.

March saw one of the biggest games of the season as Town travelled to Caernarfon who needed a victory for an outside chance of winning the lead. John Hasledin gave Town the lead midway through the first half but the Canaries equalised a few minutes later. The game ended 1-1 which all but ended Caernarfon’s chance of winning the League but kept Town’s chances alive. The Wellmen then made it into the semi final of the Barritt Cup after beating Llanrwst 3-1 and then a few days later, we faced Llanrwst again at their ground in the League and again we were victorious after a 4-2 win. We then made it to the Final of the Barritt Cup after beating Glan Conwy on penalties, Tony Roebuck scoring the winning penalty after the game ended 3-3 after extra time. Ashley Durham and a Sam Jones double for Holywell. We rounded off March with a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Pwllheli which was a big blow in our pursuit for the championship.

We got back to winning ways in our match against Denbigh Town and with the scores all level at 1-1 at the interval, Town came out and played excellent football and won the game 3-1, Steve Thomas double and Tony Roebuck getting the goals for The Wellmen, and in fairness, the score could have been a lot worse on Denbigh Town. We travelled to Barmouth for the Easter Monday clash and despite going behind early on in the game, we came home with the points as goals from Tony Roebuck (2) and Gareth Thomas gave us the points. A Wayne Edwards double gave us victory in our home game against Gwalchmai before April ended with the biggest game of the season when we faced our nearest challengers to the championship, Holyhead Hotspur. We had a dream start when John Haseldin gave us a 2nd minute lead, and were unfortunate not to increase our lead as we had a goal disallowed from Terry Jones and a Danny Henley effort went inches wide. Second half was a different ball game and with the strong wind behind them, Holyhead scored 3 goals to win the match and in turn, gave themselves one hand on the League Championship Trophy.

We travelled to Glan Conwy for our last away match of the season and won by 3 goals to 1 courtesy of a Wayne Edwards Hat trick. This meant going into the last match of the season, we still had an outside chance of winning the league, as we had to beat Barmouth and pray for Holyhead to slip up against Llanrwst. We thrashed Barmouth 7-0 with amongst the goalscorers, Wayne Edwards getting himself his second hat trick in a week. We eagerly awaited news over the internet of Holyhead’s result and unfortunately for us, they won 4-1 to clinch the title. Despite the 7-0 scoreline, the result felt like it didn’t matter, and as Holyhead celebrated, we contemplated on what could have been and we must build on this campaign and once again challenge for honours next season. Our last match of the season was the Barritt Cup Final at Caernarfon against Holyhead Hotspur. We hoped to get one back at the league champions but it wasn’t to be as they took a 2 goal lead into the break. Sam Jones did pull one back in the dying minutes but they held on to victory.
