NEW Holywell Town manager John Haseldin says his side are all set to achieve their number one goal – promotion from the Welsh Alliance.

Haseldin, who made the step up to player-manager in June, is content with how pre-season is going and is looking forward to the Division One opener on August 11.

On Saturday the Wellmen saw off Penyffordd 3-1 thanks to a Tom Carney hat-trick and Haseldin was pleased with what he has saw.

“Pre-season has been a success so far, we’ve rotated and looked at different players,” he said.

“We’ve got some tough tests coming up with Buckley and Flint, but it’s been satisfying so far.”

Last season Holyhead Hotspur pipped Town to the league title by one point, before the rivals went head-to-head in the Barritt Cup Final, with Hotspur winning 2-1.

Manager Mike Thomas then left Halkyn Road and Haseldin was advised to apply for the role by the committee.

“I wasn’t sure at first because I’m new to management and it’s a big club, I needed the right support,” he said.

Former Denbigh Town manger John James has came in as assistant manager with Andy Lewis and Craig Knight completing the coaching team.

This week the club hope to add an as-yet unnamed striker to their squad.

“I think me becoming manager convinced a few of the young stars from last year to stay because they obviously know me,” added Haseldin.

Personally he has found it tough sitting out some of the early friendlies, but Haseldin made it clear that even he is not guaranteed a starting place and in-form players will make up the side.

“When it comes to the crunch I’ll be making decisions which are best for the team,” he said. “I know the lads well but I’ve made it quite clear I’m not afraid to drop anybody.”

The new manager feels his side is stronger than last season and plans for an under 16 side will only help breed new talent.

He revealed he has a two-year plan which targets promotion for the club.

“I was only going to take the role if I could improve the club,” he said. “We’ve looked brilliant in pre-season and everyone is excited about the challenge.”
