With the new season nearly upon us, we met up with Gareth Sudlow, the new Manager and asked him a few questions.

"The club is just brilliant and so infectious, you get hooked on it!"
- Manager Gareth Sudlow

Firstly, congratulations on getting the Holywell Town job, so what’s the past few weeks at the club been like since taking over?

Thank you very much, it’s been hectic, very hectic but I feel we are making great strides now and looking forward to pre season training starting this week. I had to get a backroom of Staff that i know and trust and are of the highest standard and I believe I have that now and can’t wait to get going properly.

Outside of football, tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m married to Jess and we have 2 Children. Amber who’s 7 and Jax who is 11 weeks old. Jess has been brilliant since I got offered the job and knew what an opportunity it is for myself and her support was instrumental in taking the job which is great.
I work at Airbus and I also play pool in the Chester league a few nights a week but I can see that stopping now after taking this job haha.

When you singed for the club as a player, did you ever think that one day you would be Manager?

When I signed for the club, I signed for Johnny who has been brilliant with me since my first day here. Then you play for the club and you instantly strike a bond with it and all the fans. They are the best around. So when I was approached for the job I was a little shocked as never thought about being manager here but then on the other side I felt honoured and excited to be asked. I know what this club means to so many people and myself and the backroom staff will be doing our upmost in keeping the standards of this great club at their highest.

You’ve had a good football career across North Wales and the North West of England, can you give us an outline of your career and any highlights at any of your previous clubs?

I was at Wrexham FC from 8 years old until 19 when I broke my ankle on my reserves debut which put an end to my professional career there. I then signed for Newtown in the Welsh Prem for a couple of seasons which I really enjoyed but the travelling to mid wales for matches and training was a bit much so signed for Airbus in their 2nd season of the Welsh Prem and loved it there. I spent 3-4 seasons there and then I signed for Caersws. Again another great club that I stayed there for 5 years. Then I moved onto Conwy which was a really enjoyable time and once Mossy took over I was made captain and that’s where we met. I spent 2 seasons at Y Morfa but then decided to take time away as wasn’t enjoying like I should of been so played local for a year but after that I had to give in to Johnny’s calls and come down to Holywell and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve loved it here and want the good times to continue. The highlight has been captaining Wales at the European U19 championship whilst at Wrexham.

The Huws Gray Alliance is going to be tough this year with a lot of big clubs in there, what are your thoughts on the league and who do you expect to do well?

It is going to be very tough this season with the relegation of Bangor into the mix in what was already an unbelievably tough league with the likes of Rhyl, Airbus, Flint, Porthmadog just to mention a few. There will be no easy games at all this season but that’s what we all want. Entertaining matches week in, week out and that’s why in my eyes it’s the best league in wales. The teams I’ve mentioned will all be there abouts and it’s up to us to be in the mix with them.

What are your thoughts about Holywell Town Football Club and what we have in place here at Halkyn Road, and what’s your vision for the future?

The club is just brilliant and so infectious, you get hooked on it. The plans for the future are so exciting and I’m loving being part of discussions about the academy and attracting the best young talent in the area which for me in the long term is key to progression. My vision for the future is to keep the club on the steady rise it’s been on for a numerous amount of years now, progressing us forward and keep us challenging at the top end of this league.

Have you got a message to the supporters?
I want to thank you all for all the good luck messages since I’ve taken over and also for how well you have taken to me since I arrived at the club and believe me I will be doing everything I can to repay you all. I look forward to seeing you all for pre season and Roll on the 10th August.
