With the fixtures for next season being released today, lets take a look back at last season's campaign in the Huws Gray Alliance League.

The season was soon upon us, and the fixtures were released which saw Gresford Atheltic visit Halkyn Road for the first match of the season. A good crowd in the warm sunshine witnessed a great game between two sides which had done well the previous season in their first season back in the Huws Gray Alliance. A Phil Lloyd goal in the final 10 minutes gave the Wellmen an opening day victory. Next saw the Wellmen travel to Holyhead and the winner that day was the wind coming in off the Irish Seas and the game ended 0-0, with chances few and far between for both sides. The Wellmen then welcomed Penrhyncoch to Halkyn Road and another point went on the board after a 1-1 with the mid Wales side. Next up was the big derby with neighbours Flint Town at Cae Y Castell, and the Wellmen continued their unbeaten start winning 2-1. Steve Thomas giving the Wellmen the lead before Flint Town equalised on the stroke of half time. A Lee Emberton goal midway through the second half saw the Wellmen claim all three points, much to the delight of the large Holywell Town contingient who made the short journey that evening.
September saw the Wellmen lose their first match of the season with Prestatyn Town winning by a goal to nil at Halkyn Road, before Town were knocked out of the FAW Word Cup by newly promoted Welsh Premier League side Cefn Druids before Town were back to winning way winning 3-0 at Caersws, Lee Healey and a Paul Williams brace on the scoresheet for the Wellmen. A midweek win at home over Denbigh Town was next on the agenda, and Town duly obliged winning 2-1, Lee Healey getting both goals. Town then fell to defeat at Porthmadog before finishing off the month of September with a 3-1 win over Conwy Borough.
Town then went on the rampage at Coedpoeth in the 1st round of the Welsh Cup, winning 8-0 before falling to defeat at Penrhyncoch in the League Cup. Town then made the short trip to Buckley Town and newly signed Shaun Tuck made his debut and scored a hat trick, again, the large Town contingent left Buckley Town full of praise for the new signing. Mold Alex then made the short journey to Halkyn Road, and two late goals by Shaun Tuck gave the Wellmen a 2-0 victory. Town then made the journey to Guilsfield and came home with a point before Town welcomed Llanraeadr Ym Mochnant to Halkyn Road in the second round of the Welsh Cup, and Town eased through to the 3rd round with a convincing 3-0 win. Town then welcomed last year’s champions Caernarfon Town to Halkyn Road, and despite taking a 1-0 half time lead, Town fell to a 3-2 defeat. It was more bad news in the game for the Wellmen as Shaun Tuck missed a penalty and also received his marching orders for a second yellow card, a dismissal which saw him miss Town’s big Welsh Cup match against Aberystwyth Town .
As the season reached December, Town bowed out of the Welsh Cup with a 2-0 defeat at Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town, before a 2-1 defeat at lowly Ruthin Town. Town did get a point away at Penrhyncoch midway through the month which brought back a bit of confidence ahead of the big local Christmas derby against neighbours Flint Town United. Over 800 supporters packed into Halkyn Road, but unfortunately for the majority there, they witnessed a Wellmen defeat. Shaun Tuck equalised for the home side from the penalty spot before the visitors scored again to lead at the break. Town then won another penalty but the keeper guessed correctly to save Tuck’s spot kick then former red Luke Tyson came off the bench to grab a goal to give Flint a 3-1 victory.
Town’s first game of 2017 saw us make the short trip to Prestatyn Town, who were top of the league. Town were on top for the majority of the first half, and won a penalty midway through the half but again, Tuck’s spot kick was saved with the keeper, who was lucky to still be on the pitch, guessed correctly and saved the ball. On the stroke of half time, the home side broke clear and snatched a goal to give them a half time lead. Town then saw Tuck receive his second red card of the season and the home side went on the rampage firing in a further 5 goal to seal a 6-0 victory. Town then picked up a point at home to Holyhead Hotspur, Wayne Edwards firing home from the penalty spot to cancel out an earlier Holyhead goal. Town’s poor form continued with a 3-0 defeat away at Gresford Athletic, before a 1-1 draw at home against Caersws, Graeme Williams on target for the Wellmen.

The season entered February, and Town’s first match of the month was the local derby against Denbigh Town. The Wellmen put the disappointment of December and January behind them, and cruised to a 4-0 victory, with Paul D Williams, Brady McGilloway, Matty Hurdman and recent new signing Jamie McDaid on the scoresheet. Next up was Porthmadog at home, and another victory saw Town gain another 3 points, with Shaun Tuck and Matty Harvey on the scoresheet. Next up was a trip to struggling Conwy Borough, and Tuck gave Town the lead before Conwy equalised late in the half. The game looked as though it was going to end 1-1, but Jamie McDaid had other ideas and grabbed 2 late goals to give Town a 3-1 victory.
Town’s excellent run of form continued into March, with a 2-1 home win over Guilsfield, Jonathon Jones grabbing the winner after McDaid had given Town the lead before we were pegged back by the visitors. Town then suffered defeat at Caernarfon Town, going down 6-2. Town never got going in the first half and were 5-0 down before a great Matty Hurdman free kick, and a Phil Lloyd goal pulled the score back to 5-2 but a late goal by the Cofi’s saw the Wellmen come home empty handed. A creditable 2-2 draw away at Llanfair was next, with McDaid getting a double to continue his good goalscoring form of late, before a late goal saw the Wellmen beat inform Ruthin Town 4-3 at Halkyn Road. Shaun Tuck back amongst the goals grabbing a brace, with Paul Williams and McDaid also on the scoresheet.

Next was Buckley Town at Halkyn Road, with the visitors fighting relegation, we knew it was going to be tough and we the game ended 3-3, with Graeme Williams and Mark Winslade amongst the goal scorers. Town’s final home game of the season saw Llanfair United visit Halkyn Road, and Town scraped a 2-1 win with Steve Thomas and Jamie McDaid getting Town’s goals. Town were then knocked out of the NEWFA Challenge Cup at home to Hawarden Rangers, the visitorsa going through on penalties before Town rounded off the season with a great 2-0 win at Mold Alex, Tuck and Gareth Sudlow amongst Town’s second half scorers, a result which saw the Alex finish in the bottom 3 of the league and their HGA status in the hands of the feeder leagues.
